Making Your Own Herbal Medicine

As we pull our woollens close around us and the leaves start to turn and fall, Autumn time is drawing in. To be honest, this is my favourite time of year. I love gathering in rosehips and elderberries, creating syrups and medicines to carry me and my family through the darkening months. It feels like the time to start knitting and crocheting by the fire and I just love all this cosiness so much!!

Make your own medicine

And so this feels like the perfect time to start making all sorts of beautiful nourishing and luxury herbal remedies, treats and tipples!

Traditionally this is the time to gather in the final harvest, to preserve, dry, spice and salt the foods. To make syrups, jams and chutneys and to consider what we can create and offer our loved ones once the longest day of the year comes around, the Winter Solstice.

What riches do we have now that we can weave together to offer one another? As the business begins closer to the holiday season, now is the time to start creating! I have given many herbal gifts over the years- herbal creams, balms, wines, liqueurs, tonics, tinctures, elixirs, scrubs, salts, teas, soaps… There are many flavours, aromas, health benefits and spicy surprises that we can offer each other! So many ways to appreciate and nourish.

For me a lot of the joy is in the creation of herbal and natural gifts. I love playing with different natural ingredients, making beautiful items that are pure and full of life. It is in the making that I stir in all the love, joy and appreciation. It is this magic that makes something that is handmade so much more special and unique that something that is bought.

Sometimes it is difficult to believe in ourselves that we are capable of making gorgeous natural items that will work and will be loved by our friends and family. Believe I know this! I remember crocetting my whole family hats for Christmas one year. The hats were all in the same colour and looked really similar. No one suited those hats. They were all terrible! I really wish I had a photo of everyone wearing them! It’s so funny! I think everyone gave a nod of thanks and squirreled them away never to be seen again!
